Now that we've talked about the oils, I want to take you one step deeper.
Because before there was a bottle of Rosemary essential oil, there was Rosemary.
Before Mugwort became something dried in a bag, burned on an altar or infused into ritual work, there was a living Artemisia plant growing out of the earth.
Before somebody labeled something “prosperity,” “protection,” “dreamwork” or “love,” there was a plant with roots, leaves, flowers, seasons, growing conditions, history and a relationship with the people who used it.
And I think we lose something when we only know the finished product.
So Black Girl Bruja is going back to the plant.

Plants are being propagated.

The seeds have entered the nursery cycle. They may be newly sown, germinating or just beginning to establish.
They are not ready for sale yet.
The plants are established and actively developing, but still need more time before they leave the nursery.

Some plants require specific growing conditions or seasons. Others are in propagation planning or the next nursery cycle.

An essential oil is a concentrated aromatic plant extract, generally produced through processes such as steam distillation or, in the case of many citrus oils, expression.
It is a botanical product.
It can be used as an ingredient in spiritual preparations.
But the bottle itself did not automatically become Money Drawing Oil because somebody printed a pentacle on the label.
A prepared spiritual oil is a formula.
Depending upon the maker and tradition, it may contain a carrier oil, herbs, roots, resins, essential oils, fragrance materials or other components chosen for a particular purpose.
Money Drawing Oil is a preparation. Come To Me Oil is a preparation. Protection Oil is a preparation.
The essential oils inside those formulas are ingredients.
And we're going to say this with our whole chest.
Hoodoo is an African American folk spiritual tradition shaped through the experiences, survival, knowledge and religious lives of Black Americans — particularly descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States.
It developed within specific historical and cultural circumstances.
That deserves more respect than: “Put lavender under your pillow because Hoodoo says so.”
No.
Different traditions have different practices, meanings and correspondences.
Modern witchcraft is not Hoodoo.
Aromatherapy is not Hoodoo.
Ceremonial magic is not Hoodoo.
Chakra systems are not Hoodoo.
They can exist in somebody's broader personal spiritual practice without pretending they all came from the same place.
Know what you're practicing. Know where it came from. And give the people who carried those traditions their damn credit.
“Natural” does not mean “put it anywhere you want.”
