Essential oils, spellwork, rootwork, energetic correspondences and the living plants behind the work.
Essential oils are more than just pretty scents — they are the soul of the plant, captured in concentrated form. In both spellwork and rootwork, these oils act as spiritual allies, carrying the vibrational frequency of nature’s most potent botanicals straight to your altar, your skin, or your spell jar.
When you anoint a candle, dress a mojo bag, or add a few drops to a bath, you're not just using a fragrance — you’re calling on a plant’s ancestral memory, elemental power, and spirit medicine. Essential oils are like messengers that amplify intention and unlock energetic doors. They:
In spell work and root work traditions, movement is everything. Energy that’s stagnant can’t manifest. Essential oils:
| Ritual Use | Oils Often Used | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Candle Anointing | Frankincense, Patchouli, Cinnamon | To amplify, charge, and direct spell |
| Bath Rituals | Rose, Lavender, Eucalyptus | To cleanse the body and aura |
| Money Drawing | Basil, Cinnamon, Bergamot | To attract abundance and opportunity |
| Love Work | Rose, Jasmine, Ylang Ylang | To open the heart and attract love |
| Protection Work | Tea Tree, Sage, Cedarwood | To create spiritual shields |
| Dreamwork & Divination | Clary Sage, Mugwort, Myrrh | To open psychic channels |
In rootwork, plants aren’t props — they are living beings. When distilled into oils, their essence remains intact. That’s why we approach them with respect, reverence, and reciprocity.
We don’t just “use” oils. We partner with them.
Not every oil is for every person. Your spiritual goals, your element, and even your ancestral lineage may affect which oils “speak” to you. Listen with your intuition. Start slow. Let the oils guide you.
Essential oils are the bridge between plant spirit and human spirit — between intention and manifestation. Whether you're doing heavy rootwork or sweetening spells, these tiny bottles carry centuries of power, healing, and wisdom.
May your oils be potent, your path be protected, and your magic be rooted in truth.

You learned the oil. Now meet the plant.
Now that we've talked about the oils, I want to take you one step deeper.
Because before there was a bottle of Rosemary essential oil, there was Rosemary.
Before Mugwort became something dried in a bag, burned on an altar or infused into ritual work, there was a living Artemisia plant growing out of the earth.
Before somebody labeled something “prosperity,” “protection,” “dreamwork” or “love,” there was a plant with roots, leaves, flowers, seasons, growing conditions, history and a relationship with the people who used it.
And I think we lose something when we only know the finished product.
So Black Girl Bruja is going back to the plant.
We're beginning a larger-scale growing project right here at Black Girl Bruja.
Seeds are going in.
Plants are being propagated.
And as they become established, many of the herbs you just read about — along with some of the stranger, older and harder-to-find plants I love — will become available as living 6-pack starter plants.
Not just Basil.
Not just Rosemary.
We're talking Mugwort.
Black Seed — Nigella sativa.
Lungwort.
Clary Sage.
Lemongrass.
Lavender.
Mint.
And we're going further.
Because I want you to have the opportunity to know these plants before they become an ingredient.
Grow them. Watch them. Smell the leaves. Learn their botanical names. Learn what part of the plant is actually used.
Learn the difference between what tradition says about a plant and what the actual plant does.
That is a different relationship than simply buying a bottle.
And that's exactly what I want.
Black Girl Bruja is building a living nursery of herbs used in folk practice, ritual, home herbalism and everyday plant work. As plants become established, many will be available as 6-pack starter plants.
Each category below connects the oil work back to the living plants.
Movement, business growth, stability, opportunity and abundance.

Rosemary · Lemongrass · Lavender · Mint Shop This GardenThe beginning of the Black Girl Bruja Living Apothecary.
Some will be familiar. Some will be the good weird shit you do not see sitting beside the parsley at every garden center.
Baby plants. Real roots. Ready for you to continue growing.
The seeds have entered the nursery cycle. They may be newly sown, germinating or just beginning to establish.
They are not ready for sale yet.
The plants are established and actively developing, but still need more time before they leave the nursery.
This means the 6-pack is established and available for purchase while inventory lasts.
Some plants require specific growing conditions or seasons. Others are in propagation planning or the next nursery cycle.
Baby. We need to talk.
An essential oil is a concentrated aromatic plant extract, generally produced through processes such as steam distillation or, in the case of many citrus oils, expression.
It is a botanical product.
It can be used as an ingredient in spiritual preparations.
But the bottle itself did not automatically become Money Drawing Oil because somebody printed a pentacle on the label.
A prepared spiritual oil is a formula.
Depending upon the maker and tradition, it may contain a carrier oil, herbs, roots, resins, essential oils, fragrance materials or other components chosen for a particular purpose.
Money Drawing Oil is a preparation. Come To Me Oil is a preparation. Protection Oil is a preparation.
The essential oils inside those formulas are ingredients.
And we're going to say this with our whole chest.
Hoodoo is an African American folk spiritual tradition shaped through the experiences, survival, knowledge and religious lives of Black Americans — particularly descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States.
It developed within specific historical and cultural circumstances.
That deserves more respect than: “Put lavender under your pillow because Hoodoo says so.”
No.
Different traditions have different practices, meanings and correspondences.
Modern witchcraft is not Hoodoo.
Aromatherapy is not Hoodoo.
Ceremonial magic is not Hoodoo.
Chakra systems are not Hoodoo.
They can exist in somebody's broader personal spiritual practice without pretending they all came from the same place.
Know what you're practicing. Know where it came from. And give the people who carried those traditions their damn credit.
“Natural” does not mean “put it anywhere you want.”
“Learn the oil. Know the plant. Grow the work.”
Start with a few. Learn them. Smell them. Grow them. Learn their botanical names. Research the plants. Learn their histories. Learn which tradition a correspondence comes from. Keep notes.
Build relationships with your materials instead of collecting correspondences.
